RE: mission texas
We stayed there for a month last winter....and both the above are correct. The park has nice sized sites, great people in the office (very friendly and helpful), nice seasonal residents who welcomed us "outsiders", a huge community room with dances, card games, and Sunday church services, and a BEAUTIFUL pool. The railroad tracks do, indeed, run right along the highway in front (Business 83, I think), and the first night (about 1 AM) the horn scared the pants off us. But by the third night, we barely noticed it. There is a LOT of train activity around Mission, but it doesn't interfere with anything, including sleep. By the way, many of the trains have no engineer on board, and are operated by remote control. We found this very interesting. We weren't crazy about the RGV in general, but if we were to return, we would definitely stay at either Mission Bell again, or its sister park across the street, Trade Winds. Both are older parks with a lot of park models, but very clean, reasonably priced, and great people. Just one thing: you have to make your own arrangements for cable TV, and we had an issue with the cable company. We ordered, and paid in advance for, one months service. Then the cable company tried billing us for additional months because we didn't officially "cancel" when we left. We refused and they finally agreed, but make sure the cable company gives you a receipt for only the time you want to stay there, and no more....and get it in writing. That's all that saved us from more fighting. Have fun.
RE: Partially closed campgrounds...
My feeling is, if they advertise amenities that you don't get because of the season, or for whatever reason, and won't adjust the rate, just move on to another campground. It's becoming a buyers market nowadays. However, if you're one of the ones that don't mind paying for things you're not getting (pool, Wi-Fi, cable TV, etc.), just keep doing it....the business appreciates your contribution. :R By the way, I have a friend that offers an all-you-can-eat buffet at his restaurant that includes lobster, crab, and prime rib. It's only $19.95! He's out of the lobster, crab and prime rib, and has been for a few months, but you can still get the salad bar and potatoes for $19.95.....come on down! :B
RE: Welcome to KOA
Actually, the OP was talking about one specific KOA, not the whole chain. Further, although I am not a fan of MANY of the KOA's, I have stayed in one that is in Wapakoneta, Ohio, near Lima, that is not only the best KOA that I have ever stayed in (by far), but is one of the best of ANY of the RV parks that I have stayed in. The defenders of KOA's seem to be the ones that generalize by defending ALL of the KOA's, not just the ones that deserve to be defended.
And PLEASE don't start bringing the term PREJUDICE into a simple disagreement about campgrounds! :R
RE: Welcome to KOA
Hey, yet another KOA bashing thread! It has been a couple of months so it is about due. :-)
Then maybe there are legitimate reasons that cause KOA to get bashed so much.
RE: What am I missing??
What state do you want to stay in, and how much do you want to spend? I've seen campgrounds and RV parks anywhere from $175 per month on up, so I'm sure there is something out there for you. Just try and avoid terms like "reasonable, affordable, and inexpensive", because these words mean different things to different people. Indicate the price range you are looking for, and what kinds of amenities you're interested in (pool, tennis courts, nothing except showers and restrooms, etc.), and I think people will be able to help out.
RE: Welcome to KOA
So you buy the KOA card.. they overprice their sites to begin with but you end up coming back again since you have the card. You pay the discounted yet still overpriced site costs and they make their $$ back over time.
This is pretty much what the membership programs are about. You buy the card, then you feel obligated to go to KOA's to "get your money's worth" out of the membership. It's no different than buying a membership to Camping World, Thousand Trails, Good Sam, etc. Basically, you're pre-paying for part of your purchasing experience, but mainly you're getting locked in to buying their service so that you can get the most out of your membership purchase cost. To get 10% off of a product or service that is already inflated 20% doesn't make much sense to me.
RE: Camping World and Digital converters
I guess I could understand the arguement that an RV repair facility might not be expert in all systems in an RV (although then they should make it clear that they are only experts in some things and not others), BUT, that doesn't explain the response, or lack of one, from the "customer service" department. Camping World seems to be getting a reputation for poor work, but even worse customer service.
RE: rockport recommendation
Circle W was very nice. It's at the end of a road, so there is very little traffic. There are quite a few park models there, but the facilities are nice and the price is excellent. Also, Sandollar is a nice campground, but the sites are tight in some areas. Drifters was excellent, but they were booked for a year in advance when we tried to reserve a site. One to avoid is Lagoons. It's very nicely landscaped, but the sites are WAY too close together, and the trees are overhanging the road causing some with big rigs difficulty in manuevering. But the main problem is they booked us where we PAID IN ADVANCE, and when we got there they wanted $200 more per month! They said we must have been mis-quoted. When we showed them the paid receipt, it made no difference to them, so obviously their word can't be trusted. Also, they advertise wireless internet, but we could not access it from our site, and even when we took the laptop next to the clubhouse, where the antenna was, it was very week. And that was $35 extra per month to boot. When I mentioned the lack of signal, their response was "Yeah, it's a problem alright".
RE: What’s up with bicyclists riding the white line?!? (rant)
Yeah, I've run across these knuckleheads before too. I guess they just like to dare you to hit them. What they don't realize is that the resulting lawsuit won't do them any good. However, their widow will undoubtedly enjoy using the insurance money to entertain the pool boy!
RE: Fast Food....I remember some of these.......
remember these?

Okay, I'll bite. What is it? I can see it's made by Zenith, so it's probably part of a TV, but what part? Is it a cable remote control?
RE: A Rat. . .A Rat...YUCK!!!!!
I would stay away from poison. Too much chance of dogs getting it directly, or indirectly by eating the rat after it has died. You may want to contact an exterminator, because if you SEE one, you may HAVE several.
RE: A Rat. . .A Rat...YUCK!!!!!
Did it look like this? My neighbors kid was cutting the grass and started yelling about a huge, dead rat he found. He came up to the patio with a garbage bag with what looked like a watermellon in the bottom. Yep, a dead possum.
RE: Nashville campground
I would agree with Dave about Two Rivers RV Park, although that is on the northeast corner of Nashville. We've stayed there many times and like it. If you really need to be closer, you might try calling a few mobile home parks in the area. Some of them will rent out sites for longer periods, and for less than an RV park.
RE: My 'progressive' city...........gotta love these morons.....
Hey, maybe they can take it a step further and DNA all of the birds as well. When a bird dumps on a statue of one of the founding fathers, they can I.D. the correct bird and send the "Doo-Doo Cops" after him. :R Better yet, how about the local politcians? They seem to leave huge quantities behind every time they say something, just like their doggy DNA proposal. :B
RE: Temporary snowbird from Michigan
You may have a tough time finding anyplace around Christmas. That's the peak Snowbird season, and a lot of the parks are filled from November through April. However, if I was looking for that time and location, I would first try the state and county parks. Also, down around Fort Meyers is a campground called the Red Coconut that is right on the beach that you might try. Finally, you might try this website and check out some of the parks in the area you're interested. Then go to rvparkreviews.com to get more personal information on the ones you're interested in. You should be able to find a place for just a week, because it's the monthly rentals that are hard to come by in the winter, but don't wait too long to make a reservation in that area. Good luck.
P.S. I think campercajun thought you were going now, rather than Christmas. Hurricane season is over by then, but it's in full swing now. Your main concern then will be getting down there, and back home again, without running into snow.
RE: urine test
So are you really a doctor?
And personally, I couldn't care less what you, or any other dopers, put in your bodies. Feel free to use arsenic, turpentine, WD40, bat urine, or anything else you choose to inject, snort or swallow. Just don't expect me to pay for it, pay you while doing it, or pay for your "rehabilitation" after you've done it! I will, however, be more than happy to donate an old shoebox for your remains after they cremate you! :B
Nah. But I liked playing it when I was a kid! :B

Something tells me that those on welfare or on drugs are not living the "Life of Riley".
Nor should they be! They're living off OUR efforts. If they want the "Life of Riley", let them get a job and work for it.
